  4.    it was 4:15 p.m. on friday, september

  6. 13th. sgt. haskill and officer mcaleavy
  7.  
  8. were discussing the accord that had just
  9.  
  10. been signed between israel, egypt and
  11.  
  12. jordan. both agreed that the president
  13.  
  14. had pulled off a real political coup,
  15.  
  16. but mcaleavy was convinced that the
  17.  
  18. whole scheme was bound to fall apart.
  19.  
  20. syria and the p.l.o. both swore to

  22. retaliate. the people of the u.s. and

  24. egypt would pay in blood! sgt. haskill
  25.  
  26. was about to explain why he disagreed,

  28. when the phone rang. it was nathan

  30. rothstadt calling to speak to the chief.

  33.    five minutes later, the chief came

  35. out of his office. "if you two have

  37. finished solving the world's problems,

  39. maybe you'd like to do some work." the

  41. chief turned to sgt. haskill. "deek,

  43. get everyone on duty into the squad

  45. room in 15 minutes. daniel rothstadt,

  47. nathan's 14-year-old son, has been

  49. kidnapped."

  52.    at 4:35 sharp, the chief began his

  54. briefing. "all right, everyone, listen

  58. rothstadt got a call from a man claiming

  60. he had snatched her son. he demanded

  62. $500,000 in small, unmarked bills. he

  64. told her he'd call back at 9:00 p.m.

  66. tonight with the details on how to

  68. deliver the money. she told the caller
  69.  
  70. that she and her husband would only pay
  71.  
  72. the ransom if they could speak directly
  73.  
  74. to daniel at 9:00 to make sure he was
